Sounds like a gruesome headline to an amazing horror movie, but the burial site found on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center is becoming a big problem.
What was suppose to be a new parking lot for the university, university officials discovered 1,000 bodies who they think were patients from the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum.
The unmarked grave site poses a huge problem for the university who expansion plans will have to be put on halt to relocate the bodies.
Dr. James Keeton, dean of the medical school, said that moving the remains to a new burial site would cost an estimated $3 million — that’s $3,000 per body.
The university has decided instead of relocating the bodies, they will relocate to another park of the 164 acre campus. This unmarked grave posses the question if there are more unmarked graves on campus.
Experts think any further building expansion to the campus will have to be reconsidered.
The Mississippi State Asylum opened in 1855 and operated on UMMC until 1935, when it moved to it’s current location at Whitfield.
